"I would burn for you No one wanted to remember who started the fire. Not till later, after everyone had gone home, died or been taken off to the Shantytown Hospital. Quite a few got picked up by the Subreality Burn Unit. But it started very early in the evening, and, as fires are, it burned deep into the night, destroying everything in its path. The survivors didn't want to think about it. The dead couldn't.
"See your face every place that I walk in Her name was Rachel, she was one of many. It had been a long time since she'd been written. So long that she sometimes felt she'd been forgotten. But that wasn't possible. After all, She wouldn't forget her, would she? No. She loved Rachel, and thought about her constantly. She was just busy. Busy with other fictives, other people. Rachel would frown when She thought about it. Why was She busy with others? Why wasn't She writing HER? It really wasn't fair. All these people could fend for themselves, but Rachel needed Her. "Morning Rachel." "Morning, Jean." She replied obediently as the psychologist came into her room. "How are you feeling?" The other woman asked with a smile. "Sane." Ray replied chirpily. Jean laughed and made a notation on the chart she was carrying. "That's good. Another week, and we'll be letting you out, I bet." "Yeah, I'm such a wild animal, I am." Ray winked conspiratorially. "So, how'd the date go?" "It went." Jean sighed. "I don't know if it went well, though." "Well..." "I need to get on my rounds, actually." "Ahh.." Rachel looked disappointed at the information. "I'll drop back later when I'm not busy, 'k?" The girl brightened. "Okay."
"I would pray for you "Hear me crying out to you. You said never, never, would I leave," Rachel was singing. It was something she liked to do in her spare time. "Here's a tear from me to you." It had been four months since her last stay in the Subreality Mental Hospital. And now things were better. She was living on her own in Shantytown. Babysitting some of the fictive kids who ran around--for the food money, more than anything. The kids liked her, too, which was why they'd shown her their little stash once. It was a nice stash, with useful things like old pens and pins and a few broken matches.
"I would lie for you ::I am the PHOENIX!:: "That's nice, dearie. Would you like a cuppa?" "No." "Oh. Well, would you like a seat, while we decide what to do with you? You're a very dangerous influence, after all." "Well, it's not my fault I was given such power." "Yes, dear, but have you ever used it wisely?" "..." "I thought not. Drink your milk."
"I would die for you The power flared through her, invigorating. ::This will call you. Please come. Please.:: Over the tops of Shantytown, a golden bird arose, distorted in its shape as the edges licked hungrily at the buildings around it. ::I burn for you.::
"Violate all the love that I'm missing The fire burned a fourth of the Shantytown buildings before the fire department got it under any semblance of control. Many, many people lost homes that night. Some died. Some would live, scarred and broken. At the heart of it all, Rachel lay curled, peaceful in death as she never had been in life.
"I would cry for you --
